Mashable – About.me iPhone App Launches With ‘Who’s Nearby’ Feature

About.me iPhone App Launches With ‘Who’s Nearby’ Feature

The simple one-page profile platform About.me is now available on iPhones.

Since its 2010 launch and acquisition by AOL, around 1.5 million people have built a splash page, a collection of their social media handles. An About.me page consists of a background photo, as little as two or three lines of text and buttons linking to a person’s social networks.

It’s a summary of who you are online that you can attach to email signatures, attach to Twitter and now view on your phone. The personal pages are short and sweet. The sleek interface packs a punch with its analytics system. Stats include views per month, clicks, links to you, average time spent on people and more.

Now, About.me iPhone app users can make pages on-the-go as well as connect with people on the street with the mobile app. The ‘Who’s Nearby’ feature — unique to the app — is something that will appeal to people watchers, co-founder Ryan Freitas told Mashable.

NWSource – Chinese teen sells kidney to buy iPhone, iPad

Chinese teen sells kidney to buy iPhone, iPad

Authorities have indicted five people in central China for involvement in illegal organ trading after a teenager sold one of his kidneys to buy an iPhone and an iPad.

The case has prompted an outpouring of concern that not enough is being done to guard against the negative impact of increasing consumerism in Chinese society, particularly among young people who have grown up with more creature comforts than generations before them.

The suspects in the city of Chenzhou are accused of organizing the removal and transplant of a kidney from a 17-year-old high-school student surnamed Wang, the official Xinhua news agency said late Friday.

A woman on duty Saturday at the Chenzhou Beihu District People’s Procuratorate in Hunan province confirmed prosecutors are handling the case and that the defendants are facing charges of intentional injury.

She refused to give her name and referred further questions to the city-level procuratorate’s media office, where phone calls rang unanswered.

The defendants include a surgeon, a hospital contractor and brokers who looked for donors online and leased an operating room to conduct the procedure, Xinhua said.

It said about 1.5 million people in China need organ transplants while only about 10,000 are performed each year, fueling the illegal trade in organs.

Xinhua described one of the defendants named He Wei as being broke and frustrated over gambling debts. It said he asked another defendant to look for organ donors in online chat rooms and someone else to lease an operating room for the transplant, which took place in April last year.

He received $35,000 for the transplant, gave the student $3,500 and shared the remaining money with the other defendants and several medical staff involved in the operation, Xinhua said.

When the student returned home, he was asked how he could afford a new iPhone and an iPad, and he told his mother he sold one of his kidneys, the report said.

The Southern Daily newspaper reported last month that other individuals have sold kidneys, or seriously considered doing so, to earn money for reasons that included paying off large debts, making a payment on a smartphone, or paying for an abortion for a girlfriend.

InformationWeek – Why Apple Must Enable FaceTime On LTE

Why Apple Must Enable FaceTime On LTE

Ever since Bell Labs unveiled its Picturephone 50 years ago, people have been captivated by the idea that calls would migrate from voice only to voice and pictures simply by merging the two most significant pieces of consumer technology of the day: telephone and television. Achieving that vision has been fraught with frustration but, finally, we’re oh so close.

Yes, webcam-equipped PCs have been able to augment chats with video for a while. But it’s taken the smartphone to really deliver on the video-calling promise. With all due respect to Skype, it’s FaceTime that has brought video calling to the masses–at least for the millions of people using iPhones and iPads. By integrating FaceTime into the iPhone phone OS (oddly, it’s still a discrete app on the iPad, Mac, and iPod Touch), Apple has turned video calling into just another communication channel, an alternative to a voice call or text message.

NVONEWS – Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 rumors: Expected shortly

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 rumors: Expected shortly

Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 are going to be the best smartphones when launched later this year. Rumors are spreading like wildfire about the two. There is no doubt about it and people are anxiously awaiting the launch of the two super phones. But to keep the suspense intact, neither Cupertino based Apple nor Korean tech giant Samsung have divulged any details about the expected release dates of the two phones or about their specs and features.

But right now the two smart phones that are in highest demand in markets across the world are iPhone 4S and Galaxy S2. The improvement in both the phones is going to be phenomenal to keep the interest of people intact in their forthcoming handsets. And reports have already appeared that both Apple and Samsung are not going to disappoint their fans.

What is confirmed about Apple’s forthcoming smartphone is the fact that Apple has decided to go for a very big 4.6 inch display instead of the existing 3.5 inch display that iPhone 4S comes with. A Reuters report has confirmed the speculations and there is no ground not to trust Reuters’ report, more so when it is clear that Apple will certainly improve the look of the product.

Samsung on the other hand is going to improve its processor in a big way. This would not just make it a lot more powerful, but more powerful than any other smartphone available in the market. Many tech makers have already started working with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad core CPU-powered gadgets. Asus has even realized the world’s first device, the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, with quad core processor. As per rumors, Apple may slot in fast 1.2-to-1.5 GHz quad-core A6 chip, with probably 1GB or more of RAM. So, we can look forward for Galaxy S 3 with a quad core processor, which will power up a device five times better than Galaxy S 2 with a dual core processor.

In the meantime, reports suggest that Samsung may not increase the size of Galaxy S3 display to 5 inch. Samsung Galaxy S3 is all set to come with 4.6-inch HD 1280 x 720 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen . On the other hand Apple’s iPhone 5 going by rumors and recent reports is going to come with 4.6 inch Quantum Dot LED display. There are reports that suggest that Apple’s display will be an edge to edge display making the gadget all the more enticing for Apple fans.

WashingtonPost – iPhone now available to China Telecom subscribers

iPhone now available to China Telecom subscribers

China Telecom Corp., the nation’s third-largest mobile phone company, starts sales of Apple Inc.’s iPhone today, drawing subscribers with subsidies the company has said may crimp profit.

The iPhone’s introduction will probably boost the carrier’s subsidy costs by 19 percent to 24.1 billion yuan ($3.8 billion), said Alen Lin, an analyst at BNP Paribas Securities Asia in Hong Kong. He cut his rating on China Telecom this week to “hold” from “buy,” citing sales promotion costs for high-end devices.

CNET – What the new iPad tells us about the next iPhone

What the new iPad tells us about the next iPhone

Apple’s newest iPad has arrived right on schedule. It may not be the huge leap forward that some Apple fans were hoping for, but it delivers some modest updates, particularly in display resolution and connectivity. And as CNET’s Donald Bell said in his First Take of the device, even these “housekeeping” improvements show that Apple can raise the tablet stakes again.

If we slice through the changes, what can they tell us about the next generation of the iPhone? Apple barely mentioned its smartphone during yesterday’s media event, but the question of what the iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple chooses to call it) will bring has been on my mind ever since the marginally improved iPhone 4S went on sale in October. When the new handset finally lands this summer (or later in the year), I suspect that it will offer some substantial upgrades. And now we have a couple of clues as to what may come.

Display

The new iPad’s QXGA display now has a resolution of 2,048×1,536 pixels. That’s an important change given that it exceeds any current tablet or laptop currently on the market. Indeed, Donald warns that you may start muttering “My precious” once you get the new iPad in your hands.

PRWEB – Maps 3D iPhone App

Maps 3D iPhone App

Whether skiing, cycling, mountaineering, off-roading or simply traveling – the Maps 3D iPhone app is the GPS navigation system for all outdoor activities. The features are a delight – mountains, valleys and own routes are displayed in 3D from start to finish for a totally new navigation experience, Head developer Moritz Gaupp, previously responsible for the map displays at Navigon, combined for the first time precise NASA scans of the Earth’s elevation profile with the topographical maps of OpenStreetMap (OSM). The app displays an outdoor route network that is up to 30 percent more extensive than traditional maps – depending on the country. Maps 3D utilizes the best data currently available for outdoor use. Users therefore benefit from the app’s unparalleled terrain display, which appears as a realistic mini-model of the surrounding region. This makes the 3D representation very intuitive to grasp compared to the classic 2D displays with contour lines (which Maps 3D can also generate, if desired). Skiers will be especially excited that the app shows more than 340 skiing regions around the world with countless slopes and cross-country ski trails.

MacWorld – Incipio Silicrylic (for iPhone 4/4S)

Incipio Silicrylic (for iPhone 4/4S)

Incipio’s $30 Silicrylic for the iPhone 4/4S is a hard-shell case with a separate silicone core. Its two-piece design sets it apart from other cases and allows customization and variation in appearance: the hard shell snaps over the soft interior bumper around your iPhone. I found the case to be well made and efficient, and can see myself using it as my main iPhone case for everyday use.

Assembling the Silicrylic is a two-part process. First, slide your iPhone into the shock-absorbing silicone piece as you would a stand-alone gel or silicone case. Then, fit the outer polycarbonate plastic shell around the inner core until it is securely locked into place. To disassemble the case, pull off the outer plastic shell, and then remove the silicone interior.
